New mandatory national standards for furniture released

According to the official Weibo of the State Administration for Market Regulation, in order to give full play to the normative and leading role of standards in the furniture industry and promote the improvement of the quality and safety level of furniture products, the State Administration for Market Regulation (National Standards Committee) recently revised and issued the "Technical Specifications for Furniture Structural Safety"(GB 28008-2024),"Limits of Hazardous Substances in Furniture"(GB 18584-2024), and "Technical Specifications for the Safety of Infants and Children's Furniture"(GB 28007-2024) are three mandatory national standards, which are under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

In terms of furniture structural safety, the "Technical Specifications for Furniture Structural Safety" standard stipulates basic safety project requirements such as rounded chamfers, firmness of parts and components, sharp edges and sharp angles, vertically moving parts, anti-falling devices or warning signs, caster locking and overall product stability. At the same time, corresponding safety requirements are put forward for the characteristics of bunk beds, screens, folding rollaway beds, laboratory furniture, bathroom furniture, glass furniture and other products. The release and implementation of standards will play an important technical supporting role in ensuring the personal safety of furniture users.

In terms of restricting harmful substances in furniture, the "Limits of Hazardous Substances in Furniture" standard regulates the requirements for the limit of harmful substances in various types of furniture, adds the definition and limit values of total volatile organic compounds, and clarifies the mobile harmful elements of various furniture products. The limit value of heavy metals unifies testing indicators such as phthalates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and decomposable aromatic amine dyes, and also proposes a new non-destructive testing method for formaldehyde emission. The release and implementation of the standard will provide a unified basis for the testing and determination of harmful substances in furniture, and will help promote the improvement of the quality and safety of furniture products.

In terms of ensuring the safety of special groups, the "Technical Specifications for the Safety of Infants and Children's Furniture" standard is applicable to the quality and safety control of all infants and children's furniture products aged 0 to 14, and stipulates materials, structure, flame retardant properties, electrical safety, general safety requirements such as harmful substance limits and warning signs, as well as safety requirements for specific products such as children's high chairs, bunk beds/high beds, cribs and folding cots, and soft furniture and corresponding test verification methods. The release and implementation of standards will help standardize the design, production and sales of infant and children's furniture products, and provide technical support to ensure the health and safety of infants and children.
