China News Online, July 23, according to the WeChat official account of the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration, in order to give full play to the normative role of standards in the furniture industry and promote the improvement of the quality and safety level of furniture products, the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration (the National Standards Commission) recently revised and released three mandatory national standards, namely, the Technical Code for Structural Safety of Furniture (GB 28008-2024), the Limit of Hazardous Substances in Furniture (GB 18584-2024), and the Technical Code for Safety of Furniture for Infants and Children (GB 28007-2024), which are under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

In terms of furniture structural safety, the "Technical Specification for Furniture Structural Safety" standard specifies basic safety requirements such as rounding and chamfering, component bonding firmness, sharp edges and corners, vertically movable parts, anti drop devices or warning signs, wheel locking, and overall product stability. At the same time, corresponding safety requirements have been proposed for products such as bunk beds, screens, folding beds, laboratory furniture, bathroom furniture, and glass furniture. The release and implementation of standards will play an important technical support role in ensuring the personal safety of furniture users.

In terms of restricting harmful substances in furniture, the "Limit of Harmful Substances in Furniture" standard specifies the requirements for the limit of harmful substances in various types of furniture, adds the definition and limit value of total volatile organic compounds, clarifies the limit value of heavy metals that can be migrated in various furniture products, unifies the detection indicators of phthalates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, decomposable aromatic amine dyes, etc., and also proposes a new non-destructive testing method for formaldehyde release. The release and implementation of standards will provide a unified basis for the detection and determination of harmful substances in furniture, which will help promote the improvement of the quality and safety level of furniture products.

In terms of ensuring the safety of special groups, the "Technical Specification for Safety of Infant and Children's Furniture" standard is applicable to the quality and safety control of all infant and children's furniture products from 0 to 14 years old. It specifies general safety requirements such as materials, structure, flame retardant performance, electrical safety, harmful substance limits, warning signs, as well as specific product safety requirements and corresponding testing and verification methods for children's high chairs, bunk beds/high beds, baby beds and folding small beds, baby beds, soft furniture, etc. The release and implementation of standards will help standardize the design, production, and sales of infant and children's furniture products, providing technical support for ensuring the health and safety of infants and children.
